Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk (Roast Almond)

Just after I finished writing my earlier blog about Bournvita, I remembered that a friend of mine had recently gifted me a bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk (Roast Almond) which was still lying un-opened in my refrigerator.

The Cadbury product that I currently have with me has batch number I50130 B1, Pkd on 01/15. Retail MRP 60.00 Rs. Bar Code 901233 014258. It also has Green Egg symbol near the ingredients list. Green Egg symbol is usually meant for vegetarian products. Also mentioned on other side of flap is a phone number 1800 22 7080 with an address in Parel Mumbai.

Seeing the ingredients listed on it, I find following items listed written in small golden fonts

Sugar
Milk Solids (21%*)
Cocoa Butter
Almonds (12%)
Cocoa Solids
Emulsifiers (E 422 and E474)
Contains Added Flavour

Without wasting any time, I straight away went to food-info.net website and

Dietary restrictions of E442
E442 is generally produced with rapeseed oil and can thus be consumed by all religious groups. However, the use of animal fat (incl. pork) can not be completed excluded.

Dietary restrictions of E474
Although mainly vegetable oils are used, the use of animal fat (incl. pork) can not be excluded. Several groups, such as vegans, Muslims and Jews thus avoid these products. Only the producer can give detailed information on the origin of the fatty acids. Chemically the fatty acids from vegetable or animal origin are identical.

Important phrases are once-again copied from the  food-info.net  website and then further highlighted.

Further, on that same website, I also found a page titled "Which E-numbers and additives are from animal origin ?" and naturally E471, E472 and E474 are listed on it.

Another point that I realize is the food-info site is having .uk in its name and at this point, I am making an assumption that all of the above Emulsifier codes are used identically all over the world

Fortunately, and to my great relief, few people from different communities have made this info public earlier
and their websites are

http://www.halalindia.co.in/ecode.html

http://www.desiblitz.com/content/animal-ingredients-in-vegetarian-foods

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_haraam_products#The_Haram_Emulsifier_Code

Official Indian government document was found here, but it was more confusing....
